Learn more about me and why I joined ConocoPhillips:

The Beginning

I was first introduced to ConocoPhillips through a university recruitment presentation. I was excited by the opportunities I saw and decided to apply for a summer student internship. After sending in my CV I was invited to an interview at the Aberdeen office where I also got a tour of the building and an introduction to life at ConocoPhillips.

I was accepted as an intern and took part in a 12-week placement in the well operations department. I really enjoyed the placement; not only was I contributing to a real task, but I was also working in a team with interesting, fun and helpful people. As part of my placement I completed the three-day offshore survival course and used this to visit a drilling rig. I found the offshore experience particularly valuable as it confirmed that a career in energy was what I was really interested in.

My work at ConocoPhillips

My first year with ConocoPhillips was extremely fast-paced: a whistle stop tour of different departments and different opportunities. As a member of the graduate recruitment scheme I moved departments every three months. One of the roles I particularly enjoyed was in the mechanical integrity group at the Teesside terminal. Within my first year I learnt a lot about the UK business, and through training courses in Norway and the USA I also learnt about the wider global business. Knowing what opportunities were available helped me at the end of my first year, when I had to decide on my next role within the company.

Career Development

At ConocoPhillips, I feel my career is definitely my own. From moving around different departments to choosing the first year placement, the choices and opportunities are all there. The same is true when it comes to professional development. ConocoPhillips has certain pre-defined courses which are mandatory for all new starts. However there is also a strong encouragement to follow individual opportunities for development within your discipline area and personal interest.

As well as formal training, I am constantly developing skills in my day-to-day job. Currently I am based in the capital projects team working on Jasmine which is a major new development in the North Sea. The role has been challenging but definitely exciting and enjoyable. I have developed my skills as an engineer as well as learning new skills in project engineering and leadership.

The Future

In the future I hope to build on what I have learnt so far, developing my engineering skills and becoming experienced in working on projects. To date, I have always worked in roles that challenge and interest me. This is what I both aim for and expect in my future with ConocoPhillips.
