Learn more about me and why I joined ConocoPhillips:

The Beginning

My career started in 1996 as a process engineer within the pharmaceutical industry. This provided me with the foundation on which to develop my knowledge and skills as a process engineer as well as to gain exposure to the challenges of designing and operating safe plant and processes. I developed my process safety knowledge further in my role as a safety consultant where I worked on an array of safety initiatives and projects for a wide range of blue chip companies and industries.

ConocoPhillips stood out to me, as a place where I would love to work. Not least because of the attitude of the company towards safety, but also because of the informal culture, supportive environment and career development opportunities that were available.

My work at ConocoPhillips

In my role as process safety engineer for the Teesside facility, my role is to benchmark, develop and maintain process safety at the site. It’s a challenging role because process safety covers every aspect of the operation; from integrity of people, plant and procedures to applying learning from incidents around the world as well as interpreting and applying guidance from the regulators and governing bodies. I therefore get to work with all disciplines at the site, across the company and within other organisations. There’s plenty of variety in my work, which I love.

Career Development

Whilst I’m very much at the beginning of my career with ConocoPhillips, I can already see a lot of experience, support and nurturing in the ConocoPhillips community to help me to develop in my role. I have been given autonomy in my work, but supported guidance and training is always available when I need it.

The Future

There’s a lot to do at the Teesside facility, and safety legislation and guidance is continually evolving in light of new global approaches and technological advances. Through making a change to the risk profile at the site, and influencing global contracts along the way, I hope to compliment the current responsibilities I have to take on a more global reach as a process safety specialist. I am working towards that aspiration.
