Financial Analyst
Learn more about me and why I joined ConocoPhillips:
After completing a degree in accountancy and management control at Sheffield, I returned to my hometown of Grimsby as an assistant accountant for a local newspaper. I remained there for five years, working up to the role of financial analyst and completed further studies to become a qualified Accountant with Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.
In July 2006, I saw an advert for a financial analyst position at ConocoPhillips' Humber refinery. From growing up in the area I was aware of the refinery as a highly regarded employer who is strongly committed to the community. I was ready for a change in direction in my career, so applied.

I have been with ConocoPhillips for nine months. My role involves collating, reconciling and reporting monthly earnings figures to both local management and group refining. I also raise and check invoices, calculate prices of what we produce based on current market prices and report on inventory movements. Analysis is needed of non-financial statistics too, like industry benchmarks and market indicators. I am also chairperson and treasurer for the small charities committee who give donations to community-focused charity groups. This work is extremely rewarding.

My induction involved various group and individual training courses, from advanced IT skills to understanding the refining industry and visits to our London and Warwick offices. I also had the opportunity to do some guided tours of the refinery and its operating units. For the first three months I shadowed my supervisor to quickly pick-up the requirements of my role. It also gave me the opportunity to ask questions. Learning about accounting principles in the oil sector was new to me and that was the challenge I looked forward to. I have a great sense of achievement in my role and it’s extremely rewarding. I have found the transition in my career worthwhile.
The people at site have made me feel welcome. There is a lot of knowledge and expertise here, so when I ask a question I get a comprehensive answer. I thoroughly enjoy this role as every day I learn something new. There are also a wide range of training tools and opportunities for development and personal growth available.

For the next year or so I would like to continue this role, building upon my knowledge and experience. I also hope to gain exposure into the production and budget setting process, which should help secure my knowledge of refinery operations. Looking to the long-term I would like more learning opportunities and being part of a global energy company I know there are many potential career routes.
