Learn more about me and why I joined ConocoPhillips:

The Beginning

I started with ConocoPhillips as a placement student within the Europe Commercial group in London. The role involved providing support for the crude and products trading floor in the finance and performance analysis group. I was given a high level of responsibility and learnt a great deal from exposure to the commercial business and finance functions.

At the end of my placement I was offered the opportunity to come back as a graduate. I was very keen on this and was interested in a role closer to the trading function. When a job came up in gas and power operations, a trading manager who knew me through my placement offered me the job.

My work at ConocoPhillips

I joined ConocoPhillips as an Operations Analyst in August 2006 in the gas, power and emissions trading group. My work involved providing operational and analytical support to the trading desk. It was a really interesting and dynamic role where I was constantly challenged and learned a great deal about how markets and trading worked.

After 2 years I started to consider my next move and one of the options available was the opportunity to join the newly created carbon team in the London office. The role of the new team was to manage the company’s carbon footprint and support and co-ordinate emissions reduction projects around the world. I was really excited by this opportunity as I have always been interested in environmental issues and an energy company is a very interesting place to learn about them. I recently started in my new role as a carbon portfolio analyst and am really enjoying it.

Career Development

Throughout my time at ConocoPhillips I have always received the support and training I need to perform well and develop my skills. On an ongoing basis, goals and personal development are monitored throughout each year and there is a mentoring system in place to give you a more informal route of support. Within the first year at the company there are also plenty of opportunities to go on courses to network and learn about the wider operations of the company as a whole.

In terms of extracurricular opportunities the company offers there are many events and activities that I have had the chance to take part in at work. These have included 3 peaks challenges, representing the company in football, netball, rugby and korfball teams, taking part in the London to Brighton bike ride, seeing various west end shows, trying salsa dancing and much more! Having all these opportunities has really helped me to build my network across the company as well as make many friends. I also lead charitable fundraising initiatives as a member of the sports and social club committee.

The Future

I am really enjoying my latest role and the opportunity it has given me to see more of the company and our activities around the world. Climate change and sustainable development is an area I can see myself staying in for the foreseeable future. For a company with a potentially significant environmental impact I have been very impressed with the drive to conduct activites with a strong feeling of responsibility to the environments that we operate in and therefore I feel that I can really help to make a difference.
