Community

At ConocoPhillips, we aspire to create communities in which citizens are safe, healthy, educated, economically stable and environmentally conscious.

Community Safety Initiatives

As well as global safety programmes, our businesses develop safety training tailored to local needs and share their ideas externally and within the company.

North Sea SafetyFor example, our North Sea operations have exceeded their year-on-year safety targets by developing a set of fundamental safety rules, sharing knowledge through twice-yearly safety conferences, working with contractors to develop zero-injury strategies and developing awareness campaigns.

Our JET stations are being upgraded with the latest video monitoring systems, alarms and cash safes. Through these and other measures, we aim to make JET the safest filling station network in Europe.

We work closely with local police in the communities where we operate. In Aberdeen, we have supported Grampian Police road safety unit with the refurbishment of their ‘seatbelt convincer’ demonstration unit. We have also supplied them with high visibility waistcoats that are loaned to schools throughout the region for use with the Scottish Cycle Training Scheme or when conducting traffic trails (walks around schools raising the awareness of local road safety matters).

Seatbelt ConvincerThe seatbelt convincer demonstrates the necessity of wearing a car seatbelt, even at a low impact speed and shows how effective seatbelts are at restraining a driver or passenger. This piece of equipment is used at events run by the road safety unit including Young Driver Training Days, and the continuation of a Driving Ambition programme with the majority of sixth-year secondary school pupils from across the region.

The JET School Run Code

The Jet School Run Code is a road safety initiative sponsored by JET Service Stations in conjunction with local schools, education authorities and Brake, the road safety charity. Its primary concern is to safeguard children arriving at and leaving schools by encouraging carers to be safe and responsible during the ‘school run.' They can demonstrate this by parking their cars well away from the yellow zig zag markings outside the school entrance, and by following our simple School Run Code.

With around 1,000 participants and 70 events during the two-week period, the AIYF brings together young performers and artists from all over the world. The festival is one of the highlights of Aberdeen’s cultural calendar and is the major summer arts event in the North East of Scotland.

Inspiring Innovation

ConocoPhillips sponsors the St Andrews Prize for the Environment, an annual competition conducted in conjunction with the University of St Andrews in Scotland. The project encourages development of practical, original and sustainable solutions to environmental challenges worldwide.

St. Andrews Prize winnerThe award recognises significant contributions to environmental conservation. Since its launch in 1998, it has attracted entries from throughout the world on diverse topics including sustainable development in the Amazon rainforest, urban regeneration, recycling, health and water issues and renewable energy. Submissions for the prize are assessed by a panel of eminent trustees representing science, industry and government. Developing Talent

Ignite schools projectNurturing talent for tomorrow is vital for any industry. In Scotland, our employees mentor young students in an industry project to demonstrate how science, technology, engineering and mathematics can be applied to oil and gas industry challenges. The students take an active part in geology, drilling, production and financial workshops. One of the tasks managed by the team to date is producing a development plan for an oil field.

A community-spirited project at our Teesside operations aims to boost communication plus inter-personal and leadership skills for the young. Working together as a team with advisors, the challenge tackles teamwork, community and business. The programme was created to address the development needs of third-year apprentices working at the site.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

At the Humber Refinery, we have created a 120-acre woodland called Mayflower Wood, the largest project of its kind in the country. Since 2005, more than 67,000 trees and shrubs from a variety of native species have been planted. Employees worked with their neighbours to develop the project, which includes family picnic areas, nature trails, educational boards and a looped walkway connecting local villages. The wood is adjacent to the 15-acre Houlton’s Covert deer park, nature reserve and classrooms, which were developed for school and community visits and is also run by refinery volunteers. More ...
