Extra information for parent/carer drivers
- Never allow anything to affect your concentration while driving. If you need to calm children down, pull over somewhere safe.
- Make sure children are restrained in a correctly fitted child seat. (Children under 135cm must travel in an appropriate restraint by law.)
- Always drive slowly around schools and homes. A pedestrian hit at 20mph or below will almost definitely survive. Hit at 30mph, they have a 1 in 5 chance of dying. Hit at 40mph, they almost certainly will die.
- Consider leaving the car at home. Find out if your school has a School Travel Plan, aimed at helping children to get to and from school safely on foot or by bike.
- Make sure your children use safe routes if they walk or cycle to school. Encourage them to learn the Green Cross Code and wear high-visibility gear. If they cycle, ensure they wear a helmet.
