Community

At ConocoPhillips, we aspire to create communities in which citizens are safe, healthy, educated, economically stable and environmentally conscious.

Community Safety Initiatives Community Safety Initiatives

As well as global safety programmes, our businesses develop safety training tailored to local needs and share their ideas externally and within the company.

For example, our North Sea Business Unit has exceeded its year-on-year safety target by developing a set of fundamental safety rules, sharing knowledge through twice-yearly safety conferences, working with contractors to develop zero-injury strategies and developing awareness campaigns.

Our JET stations are to be upgraded with the latest video monitoring systems, alarms and cash safes. Through these and other measures, we aim to make JET the safest filling station network in Europe by 2008.

We work closely with local police in the communities where we operate. In the UK, Grampian Police road safety unit recently received 100 high visibility waistcoats and have had their ‘seatbelt convincer’ refurbished, thanks to ConocoPhillips. The waistcoats are loaned to schools throughout the Grampian region for use with the Scottish cycle training scheme or when conducting traffic trails – walks around schools raising the awareness of local road safety matters. The seatbelt convincer demonstrates the necessity of wearing a car seatbelt, even at a low impact speed and shows how effective seatbelts are at restraining a driver or passenger in place. This piece of equipment is used at events run by the road safety unit including Young Driver Training Days, and the continuation of a Driving Ambition programme with the majority of sixth year secondary school pupils from across the region.

Nurturing Arts Nurturing Arts

ConocoPhillips is one of the principal sponsors of Aberdeen International Youth Festival (AIYF), which takes place in the city each August. With up to 1,000 participants and over 70 events during the two-week period, the AIYF brings together young performers and artists from all over the world. A dance summer school, traditional music school and an opera garden were some of the offerings in the 2007 event. The festival is one of the highlights of Aberdeen’s cultural calendar and is the major summer arts event in the North East of Scotland.

Inspiring Innovation

Inspiring InnovationConocoPhillips sponsors the St Andrews Prize for the Environment, an annual competition conducted in conjunction with the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Now in its tenth year, the project encourages development of practical, original and sustainable solutions to environmental challenges worldwide.

The award recognises significant contributions to environmental conservation. Since its launch in 1998 it has attracted entries from throughout the world on diverse topics including sustainable development in the Amazon rainforest, urban regeneration, recycling, health and water issues and renewable energy. Submissions for the prize are assessed by a panel of eminent trustees representing science, industry and government. The first prize goes to the project displaying the best combination of good science, economic realism and political acceptability.

The 2008 winner was an innovative and sustainable sanitation solution, the Elephant Toilet, which could help millions of people across Africa and beyond. It benefits from simple design and construction, which can be adapted to use local building materials and in which local communities can be easily trained. The productive use of human waste to develop rich compost for nutrition gardens results in the toilets paying for themselves and being more appropriate and sustainable than any other currently in use. Winning the prize will enable a pilot programme to install over 1000 Elephant Toilets, which will benefit over 20,000 people in Southern Malawi.

Developing Talent Developing Talent

Nurturing talent for tomorrow is vital for any industry.

In Scotland, our employees mentored young students in a new industry project to demonstrate how science, technology, engineering and mathematics can be applied to oil and gas industry challenges. The students took an active part in geology, drilling, production and financial workshops, and were given the task of producing a development plan for an oil field.

A community-spirited project at our Teesside operations aims to boost communication, inter-personal and leadership skills for the young. Working together as a team with advisors, the challenge tackles teamwork, community and business. The programme was created to address the development needs of third year apprentices working on site.
