Geologist - J Block TeamLearn more about me and why I joined ConocoPhillips:
I became aware of ConocoPhillips when I applied for the MSc course in Geoscience at Royal Holloway University of London. The following year I attended an interview and was invited to attend a second round in Aberdeen. At this interview I had the chance to meet a large number of people from the ConocoPhillips geoscience community who had many of the same goals, aspirations and outlook on life as I did. I was excited about working with like-minded colleagues, many of whom shared the same passion for the outdoors as I do. I completed my Masters thesis in the ConocoPhillips office in Aberdeen and started working full-time two months later.

I started in geological operations in Aberdeen for a three month period where I was exposed to a variety of work. I worked offshore and was given opportunity to learn about the backbone of upstream success - our ability to drill successful wells.
I then transferred into exploration for almost a year and worked on an Atlantic Margin project before moving back to geological operations as a fully-fledged Operations Geologist. I enjoyed my time in operations dealing with day-to-day issues and data acquisition and working closely with the asset team and offshore workforce. There is much satisfaction to be gained in such a fast-paced environment. As I moved from well to well, I gained experience in the geology of different parts of the North Sea. I was transferred to our Stavanger office for a seven month period in 2005 to work on a high pressure high temperature (HP/HT) well in the Central Graben area with a large focus on data acquisition. This opportunity exposed me to new geology, and approaches to dealing with similar issues.

I recently completed an 18-month GRAD (Graduate Recruitment and Development) training and development assignment in Calgary. ConocoPhillips understand that young people have a desire to travel early in their careers and gain experience in as many ways as possible. The GRAD scheme focuses on giving new hires the challenges, training, mentoring and work experience needed in our first 4-5 years in the industry. This includes an option to take an international assignment. In Canada, I worked in oil sands exploration and conventional oil and gas plays in a variety of geological settings.

In my first four years at ConocoPhillips I have worked in three countries in four different roles. Each location has allowed me to maintain my outdoor lifestyle. The company has shown a commitment to recognise that people have individual needs and career goals. In doing this, it has given me a sense of loyalty that makes me look forward to a continued bright future with the company.
