Learn more about me and why I joined ConocoPhillips:

The Beginning

I applied for a summer placement with ConocoPhillips in Aberdeen after attending a presentation at university. Hearing the experience of other graduates made me want to get involved.

On my 12-week placement I worked in the process engineering team of Britannia Operator Limited (a joint venture between ConocoPhillips and Chevron). This group provides onshore support to the Britannia platform. I was given interesting work and valued getting industry experience. Like all summer students I completed the offshore survival training course and went offshore. This, and the friendly, relaxed office, good social scene and effort to make us feel at home made me want to work for ConocoPhillips. I was pleased to get a job offer at the beginning of my final year of university with no further interview.

My work at ConocoPhillips

I started working for the company in October 2006. The first year consists of four placements where graduates rotate around the business to build a range of skills. For my first rotation I returned to Britannia to continue developing my process engineering skills. I then worked with production, monitoring and reporting – the team who meter the amount of oil and gas produced from each field – and learned more about commercial.

I am currently in Stavanger, within the health, safety and environment department. I enjoy working and living in Norway, and the cultural differences. My work has allowed me to develop a wide range of engineering skills, meet contacts and build a big picture of the company and how it operates.

Career Development

I have had many training and development opportunities in my first months. I have also been given responsibility with other graduates to organise and plan company days at three universities. I have completed the company’s Pioneer graduate training programme, which aims to develop soft skills, and the Engineering Academy – a two-week training course in Houston, Texas. I have learned about other engineering exploration and production disciplines, how they interact, and about the company and its global operations. These courses were fun and I got to know other graduates.

Due to the strong links between Aberdeen and Stavanger, Aberdeen graduates have a good relationship with the Norwegian ones. We meet regularly through work and are good friends. We also went skiing together in Norway in January.

The Future

I look forward to the rest of my time in Norway and my final rotation in engineering projects. I move to process engineering in September which I will do for about two years. Beyond this I am excited about the opportunity to do a year-long international assignment as part of the GRAD (global recruitment and development) scheme – Alaska or Australia are my top choices at the moment.
