Extra information for parent/carer drivers
Never allow anything to affect your concentration while driving. If you need to calm children down, pull over somewhere safe.
Make sure children are restrained in a correctly fitted child seat. (Children under 135cm must travel in an appropriate restraint by law.)
Always drive slowly around schools and homes. A pedestrian hit at 20mph or below will almost definitely survive. Hit at 30mph, they have a 1 in 5 chance of dying. Hit at 40mph, they almost certainly will die.
Consider leaving the car at home. Find out if your school has a School Travel Plan, aimed at helping children to get to and from school safely on foot or by bike.
Make sure your children use safe routes if they walk or cycle to school. Encourage them to learn the Green Cross Code and wear high-visibility gear. If they cycle, ensure they wear a helmet.
